Sara’s Henna @ World Refugee Day Celebration – This Saturday!

World Refugee Day is an annual event held on June 20, 2010. It was introduced in 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly and since then people around the world have celebrated this special occasion. The purpose of the World Refugee Day is to draw attention to the plight of refugees and commemorate their strength as ordinary people who have overcome extraordinary situations.

Life for refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong is dull and tough. Asylum seekers here are only provided with a very basic assistance and pretty much left on their own – Hong Kong doesn’t care if they sleep on the streets and struggle to survive. Unfortunately discrimination against refugees is still an everyday reality here as well and especially local people do not understand that becoming a refugee is not a choice that someone makes – it’s the last resort for a person and often the only option left to save his or her own life.

This World Refugee Day we ask Hong Kong’s people to commemorate the incredible strength of refugees all around the world, show empathy with those who are struggling with their day-to-day lives and help them to rebuild their lives.

The event will feature amazing cultural performances, delicious international food and drinks, fun games, interactive activities for all as well as beautiful handicraft booths!

Date/Time: June 19, 4-8 PM (Official programme starts at 5 PM)
Venue: Piazza, Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui
Tickets: Donation of HK$ 80

All the proceeds will go towards the Refugee Programme of Christian Action, which is providing essential humanitarian assistance to refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong.

Feel free to bring friends and help to spread the word!

P.s: Don’t forget to come say Hi at Sara’s Henna booth!:)
